My wife has had 2 hip replacements and 2 knee replacements. Total cost to us at the time: about €50. These were done within the last 10 years.

Welcome to Sweden.

Can't understand the total lack of empathy from 'Dave'. How is healthcare different from a police force or fire department?

As a European I see people in the US suffering bankruptcy from medical treatment. It's barbaric. Yet, amazingly, the US can afford 800 military bases around the world interfering left and right, causing wars, overthrowing governments, and all the other shit they do. But, hey, universal healthcare? You're a commie! Pathetic.

"... if healthcare is free, surely it will be poor quality, bla, bla, look at Canada, UK, bla, bla ..."

Disagreeing outright with that is ironic given that the article began with an example of terrible free care by a government agency. Oh, and Canada's free care now euthanizes more humans than dogs. The U.S. dies need reform but given human nature, AKA the real world, collective "care" run by the government is hardly the answer.
