I know I'm not alone in the number of times I've gotten behind a person or an organization, only to discover they got co-opted when I wasn't paying attention. Professor Hudson, in my view, points to a fundamental problem of the “free economy”: an insatiable greed that repeatedly divides “democratic” societies into rich and poor. Wealth then converts into power and, eventually, political control. As Aristotle observed, a small number of oligarchic families tend to privatise real power in democracies, whilst the façade of elected governments remains intact.

He fearlessly spoke truth to power and tirelessly exposed the lies and brutality of US foreign policy and the excesses and failures of the neo-liberal capitalist US empire. He was one of North America's most articulate socialist voices. He will be sorely missed.

Michael Parenti was a Lion - and we desperately need more Lions. Michael leaves a void. When I mention his passing the typical response is Michael who? How can so many - sleep walk through life? And their chains? OMG - Do people dearly love their cage?
The death of Michael Parenti is sad news. One need only to listen to any of his various talks to be drawn into his well-studied view of the world and of the controllers. Fortunately, although impossible to find on the internet for quite a few years, I checked recently and these talks are now available to YT. (!)
As per usual you have elucidated the inextricable mess that is ‘democracy’, however the balance that Putin seems to have employed is easily eroded with a less articulate and principled leader.
