Something, or more likely a collection of things, happened between 1965-75. Prior to that the US was THE innovator. And then, we became beguiled by leisure, and by the concepts of a globalized society.

They were indeed THE innovators what regards microelectronics and therefore they revolutionised digital computer technology in a variety of ways.

On the same time they revolutionised simulating space travel while not actually attempting to reach LEO until 1981 when Reagan, who knew nothing about the huge hoax with the previous manned space program, saw the space shuttle successfully finally actually lift US astronauts to LEO.

Since the Soviets from 1970 knew Apollo 13 was empty and therefore had the smoking gun, the simplest remaining alternative for the US was to bribe the Soviets.

The latter accepted and actually took part in another simulated space program: the joint space rendez-vous involving Apollo-Soyuz.

It was performed inside an american transport plane where zero-gravity could be simulated for less than a minute at a time, the airplane going full speed to a high altitude then tipping over into freefall mode periodically.

i love this post. hoax as "tech policy/program".

what happened? someone decided to 'slow the roll' of the innovaters,

just like they slowed the success of the american experiment.

jus like they slowed the peaceful nature of central asia's trade integration

right before 2011 when they went all on on the destruction of syria..
