I was telling someone EXACTLY THIS earlier today even BEFORE I heard Ritter's analysis and had concluded that, indeed, perhaps this is "political Theater" of the highest (or lowest) order. "By way of deception thou shalt make war". Where have we heard this before? So many lies to unravel in this scenario that I can indisputably conclude only one thing - the entire plotline is designed to keep us confused and distracted while SOMETHING ELSE is being diabolically constructed behind the scenes. As Ray McGovern would say, "cui bono"? Beyond all those bottom feeders who will profit from oil futures and weapons sales?

Absolutely Lorrain and the greatest distraction of all time is Forest Gump-Trump. Deliberately inserted for this very reason.

That said half the world woke up after covid and the subsequent injections, this too will have people finally starting to question and verify everything. In other words it's going to become a lot harder when it comes to the subterfuge. Fool me once . . . .

Alex, I follow your work and rarely miss one of your podcast appearances, so I understand your thinking. I would only challenge this by asking whether Israel would be required as an actor in this theater (I think they would, as they are the ones taking incoming fire) and whether Bibi would go along with a ruse like this, which directly contradicts his decades of lusting for this very war.

P.S. do you have a page with links to your online appearances? If not, it would be a fantastic resource for us!

I'm not sure; I suspect that Israel (+ its creator and main political sponsor, the UK) is the dupe in this game of deception. I believe there's awareness among many people in US political class that Israel is done, that it can't be saved, so it could be that the intention is to get rid of the Zionist project.

Expand full comment
PatriotInGibraltar's avatar

Thank you for this, and after giving this a lot of thought, I believe that you're right. If this really is a strategic plan of the highest level, the optimal game is played with the least intervention, i.e., letting Bibi be Bibi. His gloating, his effusive praise for Trump, going along with the lie that the U.S. strikes had an impact, etc.

Much in the way that Trump could have compelled Ukraine to settle for peace--and still can--by cutting off U.S. intel, the USA could have stopped the June 13th attack by withholding support to Israel preemptively. Instead, by "going along" with the European position of striving for the defeat of Russia, the result will be a Russian victory that once and for all eliminates Ukraine as a pressure point in the future. Bonus: it ends NATO as a viable entity.

As for Israel, if Trump actually were able to secure an agreement with Iran not to escalate against the USA, then the promise to both Russia and Iran is the same: let me do my thing, and ignore the bluster, and I'll let you have your way with your enemy. Trump will have done his part to show support for the forces using both Ukraine and Israel in their attempt to extend Western hegemony; brought his domestic neocon opponents on-side; and eliminated two bulwarks of that hegemony.

The cost of this is substantial, of course--not only in lives lost in Israel and Ukraine, but the reputational damage to the USA as a credible negotiating party. But if it works, then those costs will ultimately be trivial under a new and more stable global political order after the dust settles. We can only hope that this is really what's going on in the Trump administration.

Alex, I thoroughly enjoy your Substack, and am an avid reader...However, I disagree with this entirely... "But what’s worse, it is likely that the attacks Trump ordered were illegal, both under International and American laws."...

Sorry, but no...

An American war in Libya without direct congressional authorization, an American war in Yemen without direct congressional authorization, an American war in Syria without direct congressional authorization... just to name the ones that come immediately to mind.

This is a show... This is "Theatrics"... Nothing more... Nothing less.

The 2001 Authorization to Use Military Force is still in effect, and still being implemented beyond its original intent and purpose, but Congress still hasn’t repealed it. A Congress that wished to restrain presidential military action in the Middle East would no doubt stop it there, and they haven’t.

We are being led by our nose... It's time to look where we're being distracted from looking.

But having said that, I am not privy to the back channels of discussion(s) that no doubt have been taking place with other Arabic leaders of the region either. I seriously doubt if any of the regional states, let alone Israel, wants Iran to have nuclear capabilities. It's a foregone conclusion that if the Arabic world didn't have the West to quarrel with, the Sunnis and the Shiites would be fighting among themselves. Makes me think of Rodney King... Alex, your question who is the real target of Trump's attack, implying that the closure or impairment of passage through the Strait of Hormuz would probably hit Western Europe hardest, is fascinating.

If the conventional view were correct, namely that it's the USA, Canada, Western Europe, and Israel against Iran, Russia, and China, then closing the Strait of Hormuz would probably be suicidal for Iran. It's somewhat like the very high risk that Iran would take by killing American servicemen in retaliation for the supposed attack by the USA yesterday.

By contrast, in recent days I think something should be getting clearer for many observers, namely that one of Iran's strategic goals is to cause Israeli society to fail and therefore the Zionist project to fail. This is closely related to their goal of resisting and ideally vanquishing the empire whose true headquarters is London.

It does seem possible that Trump understands these problems and that he too would like to solve them. I referred to the "impairment" of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz above because Iran would probably want to avoid harming China. As you say, the USA has an energy cushion, and of course Russia does, too. China does not, so maybe what we will see is Iran managing traffic through the Strait so as to mitigate harm to China, inflicting a limited amount of harm on the USA and Russia, devastating Western Europe, and presumably adding to the devastation it is inflicting on Israel. In service of goals that Trump might actually share.

The entire episode definitely reeks of theater. It seems that officials in the military were talking about the limited damage of the strikes while Trump was on social media bragging about 'obliterating' the very same sites. Trump clearly does not want to be embroiled in Iran, but owes the Israel lobby $200,000,000+ in favors which seems to be why he can't just make Bibi behave.

Trump also created the mess with Iran because he wanted to look better than Obama or Biden, so he is personally vested in resolving the crisis for the service of his image which is of course, incredibly dangerous.

What seems to me to be the biggest tell, is that I cannot believe the world would allow Trump to get away with destroying nuclear sites and causing a nuclear catastrophe. No other leader in the world, no matter how brutal and authoritarian, would do such a thing. So I think had there been anything at any of the sites that the Admin could actually bomb, Trump would have avoided it so as to not be the face of a nuclear release. Of course, maybe he is that crazy; our media is so compliant with the Military agenda that this entire line of questioning has not even crossed their minds.

Most interesting is whether or not all of this was actually coordinated with Iran; they obviously do not, and cannot trust America so I do not think they would go along with allowing America to bomb any part of their country. Worse, even if somehow this kind of agreement was possible under the current circumstances, Iran wouldn't bother because Israel would find a way to leak this information and this would probably collapse the regime to imagine that the Supreme Leader would allow America to bomb them on purpose.

I have some thoughts on this if you are interested; I personally find the entire description of the raid by the Administration to be impossible.

I do believe the "attack" is a showpiece, and most of the undisclosed part of the "negotiation" is about this show rather than the impossible compromise. Israel will bear the limited retaliation for this specific attack. Otherwise, the "normal" exchange of missiles nightly between Israel and Iran will continue for a while. At least, if Israel launches missiles into Iran, Iran will respond. Iran (and indirectly Russia and China) now has a good case to study for bunker design and a thorough understanding of such bunker-buster weapons. a "show" also explains why Iran made no AD missile attack against the B-2s. What neither side said is whether Iran opened radar (GPS jamming obviously did not happen, and confirmed by USAF). USAF does not know if B-2 was detected. Iran knows if they had detected B-2 or not, but they are not going to say. Russia has one S-400 installation at a place where Russians are building a nuclear power plant for Iran. It is not clear if that specific S-400 installation has tried to detect the B-2s.

As for closing the Hormuz Strait, the Iranian Congress had voted to approve, but I heard that the decision is not final. Even if the IRGC is mining the Strait, they may not be WW2 dumb mines. Instead, these could be like the Claymore controlled mine (wired or wireless) -- will blow up only tankers belonging to the US, going to the US, or from the US. Ditto for Israel and other participants in Israeli attacks. If Iran wants to push it, they can build torpedo tubes with wired torpedoes (as most modern torpedoes are). These torpedoes can be redirected mid-swim or disabled or etc., by run-time control. The Oil to Japan, China, and India will flow through. Saudi Arabia has to use Red Sea ports to ship oil, if the Houthis sit idle.

A couple of years ago I also believed that Shi'ite in general and Iran in specific were to kill us all in launching a war against Israel. The events in the last 10 years (since the eve of 2014 Ukraine War first period) have convinced me that some Muslims still have honor (Iran and Houthis) but no politicians in the West has much, if any, honor or shame. At least, the voices of the good Westerners are not heeded, and not just on this event.

Even if this is all "theater," how many know that? How many nations of the world now look at Trump as an unreliable negotiating partner? How many don't trust him? How many hate the US even more?

And... how many of his voters has he turned away? He lied to the American public for no real reason. Yet he chose to do that, and people know it. I doubt his supporters will become Democrats, but they might choose not to support Republicans at the voting booth or via donations.

Very true. If your favorite sports team were found to play badly and lose a match, or pay another team to lose so it can win, how much longer can that team stay as your favorite?
